5 Simple Ways to Live Green

Green is definitely the new black.  But all the environmental buzzwords like going green, green solutions, and green technology may leave you wondering what are some simple, cost effective ways to incorporate sustainable, environmentally friendly options into your home and your lifestyle.

1.  Go Green with your appliances. And no we don’t mean a throwback to the seventies palette choice.  If any of your appliances are more than 10 years old, the EPA suggests replacing them with energy-efficient models that bear their “Energy Star” logo. Energy Star-qualified appliances use 10%-50% less energy and water than standard models.  So not only will you revamp your kitchen but all while helping the environment and your wallet!

2.  Clean Green. Opt for cleaning methods that are environmentally friendly and products that are natural and free of harsh toxins or chemicals.  Take it one step further and make your own Green cleaning recipes using simple ingredients like baking soda, lemon juice, tea tree oil, and vinegar.

3.  See the light. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).  The lighting costs of CFLs on average is about 1/3 the cost for incandescent lighting.

4. Conduct a quick energy audit of your home. A simple DIY home energy assessment can help you identify and target areas in your home in need of efficiency upgrades.

5.  Exercise your Green thumb. Use organic products when possible for gardening and landscaping projects.  Try starting a compost pile for landscape and kitchen waste.
